CLUB TOURNAMENT 2008

The finals of the 2008 Club Tournament were held on 28 June.

Well done to Neil Cross, this year’s Main Tournament winner, also congratulations to the winners of the other 7 supporting Finals, but most of all a big thank you to players and spectators who turned out to make the Club Tournament 2008 Finals a big success.

Match Reports…

Main Final: Neil Cross (1) vs. Anselm Gurney (2) Scores: 9-4 9-2 10-8
Fast aggressive squash from both players, with a combination of lightning fast straight and crosscourt drives, mixed with punishing trickle boasts and delicate drops, making it a closely contested match. Neil however maintained the upper hand to come through as a convincing winner.

Final 2: Maxine Dove (3) vs. Toby Hicks (4) Scores: 9-6 9-0 9-4
1st Game: Maxine started slowly, warmed into it and then took over.
2nd Game: Maxine in complete control pinned Toby to back of court
3rd Game: Maxine dominated to go 7-1 up, then relaxed a little but eventually came through

Final 3: Derek Neil (5) vs. Neil McManus (6) Scores: 9-2 9-1 6-9 9-1
Derek won the first 2 games comfortably. Neil staged a good comeback in the 3rd game but eventually Derek came through in the 4th with a greater consistency.

Final 5: Rick Ruegg (15) vs. Roger Miles (16) Scores: 2-9 9-6 9-6 9-7
Early head start from Roger winning the 1st, but Rick fought hard and staged a comeback winning the 2nd & a very tight 3rd. Roger gave a good fight in the 4th game before finally going down.

Final 6: Roger Sparrow (12) vs. Peter Ciappi (10) Scores: 9-1 1-9 9-5 6-9 10-9
Roger started very strong in the 1st. Peter then had a good run of points through 2nd and into the 3rd game, then Roger gained ascendancy in the 3rd. The 4th was nip and tuck until the end with some good rallies. Final game was superb ending with a 10-9 victory for Roger.

Final 7: Robert Hayhoe (25) vs. Peter Hales (22) Scores: 9-3 9-0 9-6
With delicate drops and a combination of drives and boasts, both players got off to a good start. Robert however using his experience and accuracy wore Peter down and came through with a convincing win.
